PANGAEA

Pangaea is well known amongst Leuven’s international student community. From the orientation days to the cultural events that take place during the year, it is one of the first things we are introduced to at the university. Although it presents itself as a home-away-from-home, there is a dark history hiding behind the comfort of those rooms. Pangaea and Home Vesalius were established in 1951, and were initially referred to as the ‘Home Congolais’, but do not be deceived by this name. It was not a residence for the university’s Congolese students, but rather, a home for Belgian Colonial’s children. There were a very small number of black students residing in the building. This, however, was merely for the sake of token representation, as can be seen in old photographs of Pangaea. This colonial past has been hiding in plain sight, memorialised even in Pangaea’s dear mosaic. During the recent renovations of the international student café, the blue mosaic decorated by a yellow star was discovered to be a depiction of the Belgian colonial flag. Pangaea’s director decided that rather than destroying the piece and getting rid of one of the few pieces of evidence indicating the buildings’ history, it should be maintained. Rather than forgetting, we must remember the injustices.
